What do you know about the folklore of the United Kingdom? Find out here about some of the magical creatures of the British Isles!

Jack Frost

PictureThe first modern depiction of Jack Frost
Jack Frost comes to your house on cold nights, and paints icy patterns on your windows. If you wake up in the morning and find beautiful patterns on your windows, then you have had a visit from Jack Frost!

Jack Frost is the personification of winter, ice, snow, and cold. He is a small man, and wears blue clothes, and has long grey hair.

Jack Frost is believed to be either a sprite or and elf. He is a mischievous character, and will play tricks on you. When he gets angry, he will bring the cold to damage and break things.

Leprechaun

PictureA leprechaun at a St. Patrick's Day Parade

A leprechaun is a small, child-sized fairy that lives in Ireland. They wear green clothes, with a green top hat. However, before the 1700s, they wore red clothes.

Leprechauns live alone, and like to be alone. They often make or repair shoes. However, leprechauns also often have a pot of gold. This means that people often chase them!

People also believe that the leprechaun keeps his gold at the foot of a rainbow. So if you see a rainbow, try to find the end of it and search for the leprechaun's gold! But be careful - you might make the leprechaun angry, and then he will play tricks on you!

Brownie

PictureA Brownie sweeping the floor of a house

Brownies are small creatures that live in Scotland and the north of England. They are small and can be male or female.

They are a type of gnome or fairy, and will help clean your house if you give them gifts of honey or porridge. However, you must remember these are gifts, not payment. If you call the gifts a "payment," the Brownie will get angry and leave your house!

In the kitchen of a Manor House, a seat was always placed next to the fire. This was the brownie's seat, and no one else would use it.

Brownies can also turn invisible, making them very good at hiding or running away. Y
ou must never give a brownie a gift of clothing. If you give them clothing, they will leave your house forever!
